Three years ago my clinical assistant (for 12 years) left me to go to Hygiene School.
I actually wanted her to go ... she’ll be an asset to our profession, and, she is like a daughter to me. She’s out now and working for a friend one day a week. Recently she mentioned to a patient that they might benefit from a night guard/NTI appliance. I guess he didn’t want to be upstaged by a lowly hygienist ... he shut her down. Humiliated her in front of a patient. Boy, did he screw up royally!! ... for 2 reasons.
She can recommend $20K a week in restorative procedures ... just from the patients in hygiene. What the hell is he doing? Is he CRAZY? You don’t kill the golden goose! What are you doing with your hygienist? Is she golden? Maybe silver? I’ll show you some education to raise the level of her career (along with your bottom line) and tell you about the ‘Dental Dance’ with your hygienist next week. Get your check book out ... I’m going to make you an offer that you can’t refuse. peace, Peter Ghana (just today) is declaring a ban on mercury products by 2020. This is in an effort to ratify the treaty agreed to at the Minamata Convention.
In the U.S., John Kerry, Secretary of State, has been asked to find out why the FDA is dragging its feet on the issue of ratifying the treaty. You don’t want to be the last in your town to figure this out ... 33% of adult Americans are looking for organic, recycling, going green and pursuing alternative health care possibilities. Dentistry for Whole Body Health is making more and more sense. peace, Peter My hygienist is concerned with the health of the patient’s gums and bone and she lets me know if a margin on one of the patient’s new crowns catches the floss. She tells me where she sees caries or fractures (in enamel and restorations). She confirms that the patient is or is NOT wearing their appliance (NGs, NTIs and RPDs). She informs me when the patient entered the practice (yes, I forget too!) and when they will need a new comprehensive exam (usually 5 -8 years).
The value of the hygienist’s ability to help maintain the supporting structures of the teeth has made her invaluable to practice growth because ... my work doesn’t mean much if the teeth aren’t going to be around when the patient is 90+. So I ask her ... will our work endure? Because of this question, her job description has changed from – someone in my office who cleans teeth to someone who transitions the patient into long-term (ideal BioCompatible) dentistry. Huge difference ... for the purpose of the practice, the hygienist’s career, the patient’s health and the profitability of the business. Go ahead and re-write the job description for YOUR hygienist. peace, Peter |
