Brand new research is in (the first of its kind) … and you will want to relate this to your patients.
The University of Georgia has analyzed over 15,000 people and guess what? The study shows that with 8 or more surfaces of amalgams (a couple of MODs and a couple of occlusals), you have 150% more mercury in your blood. [the study will be available in the Journal of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety in December 2016] Also, the research suggests that the bacteria in the gut may transform mercury into methyl mercury (the most dangerous form) and this may cause damage, even at low levels of this mercury exposure. What does it mean for you and your patients? Are they already immunosuppressed? Do they have heart conditions? Lyme’s disease? Hashimoto’s? You name it … Your healthy patients may be just fine with a few amalgams. But, do your other patients need any more causal agents for their immune system to fight? And the FDA says “pregnant women and parents with children under six who are concerned about the absence of clinical data as to long-term health outcomes, should talk to their dentist.” BUT … Most dentists get their information from the ADA and they tell us that amalgams are safe and cost effective. Dentistry’s tectonic plates are shifting! Talk to your patients about this … for their health. If you were battling health problems and there was something you could do to improve your situation … wouldn’t you want your health professional telling you about it? Chinese proverb: “A man who has his health has a thousand wishes. He who has not has but one.”
